Our Story - Precision International

At Precision International, we help your sophisticated vehicle perform to your high standards. We stay current with the fast-paced technology in today’s cars through cutting edge equipment, the most up-to-date and diverse information systems, and hours of continuing education each year.

Each of our technicians specializes in and receives continued training on specific brands of vehicles. This brand focus allows our technicians to have a deep knowledge of your vehicle and its personality for optimal maintenance and auto repair.


As the number of loyal customers has grown over the years, our business has moved several times to accommodate increased demand for state-of-the-art facilities. In 1979, Precision International first opened its doors on Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. Due to rapid success, Precision moved two years later to Hilliard Avenue, where we happily serviced your vehicles for over 10 years.

Then, in 1992 we moved to a larger shop in the historic Sawyer Motor Company building on Coxe Avenue. In December 2001, Precision International made its most recent move to 23 Sardis Road, a shop designed for even greater efficiency and accessibility.

Our office staff works to see your car is serviced correctly and delivered when promised. All service and repairs are covered by our 12 month/12,000-mile warranty for your complete peace of mind.

Name: Randy Richards

Years of Experience: 34

Years at Precision: 30

Randy Richards is the owner/manager of Precision International. He started in professional auto service in 1975 after receiving an associate degree from CPCC in Charlotte and founded Precision International in 1979. Randy is an ASE-certified Mastertech and has L1 advanced diagnostic certification. He specializes in diagnostics, electrical work, troubleshooting and engine management systems.

Married to Cindy Dollar, a popular local yoga instructor, Randy was born in Ohio and lived in Pittsburg, Los Angeles and Charlotte before moving to western North Carolina. He loves figuring out problems and fixing things.

When he's not at work, Randy spends as much time as possible on or in the water. His main hobbies are boating, swimming and scuba diving, and he loves sleeping on a boat. Every winter, he and Cindy escape the cold for a long vacation on the coast of Mexico.

Randy's dream car is a 1971 Hemi “Cuda” convertible. His brother Bill is also on the Precision International team.


Name: Nancy Kidwell

On staff since March 1994, Nancy Kidwell is Precision International's general manager and primary service advisor. Extremely knowledgeable about auto repair management, Nancy is an expert in parts acquisition and research. She has received certifications from AMI and ASE for service writing.

Born in Neu Ulm, Germany, Nancy's family moved to the US when she was 10. She has lived in the Asheville area since the early '80s.

Today, she and her husband Aaron spend much of their free time watching their children, Tyler and Kasey, playing basketball and baseball.

Nancy's idea of a perfect road trip would be to drive from North Carolina to California, with lots of shopping and sightseeing in between.

Her mom, Eleonore, worked for Precision International for 10 years before Nancy joined the company.


Name: Mark Ferrell

Years at Precision: 28

Mark Ferrell began his career as a professional auto service technician in 1978 and joined Precision International in 1981. Mark is ASE certified in seven areas and specializes in BMW, VW, Audi and several makes of Asian cars. He primarily is kept busy working on BMWs. Mark says he loves his job because the owners really care about their cars.

When Mark is off work he coaches his son's travel baseball team, which won the 2009 state championships. His ideal road trip would be the one that takes his team to the Little League World Series. Nothing makes him happier than helping children succeed.

Mark also likes to hang out on his pontoon boat with his family and ride motorcycles with his friends. His dream car is the 1977 BMW 630csi, the first year of that body series.

His family has been in the automotive business for several generations. Mark's grandfather owned a service station back when gasoline was 5 cents a gallon and his father owned a diesel service and bus leasing company. Several family members worked in Detroit for Ford and Chrysler.
